Wrought iron gates never go out of style. Whether you like traditional scrolls and finials or clean modern lines, a good set of metal gates looks the part on just about any home – and they're strong and secure too.
My wrought iron gates start from around £2,000, depending on size and design.
Made to measure
Every gate is made to fit your opening, so there are no awkward gaps or bodged fixings. We'll talk about:
- Style – traditional, contemporary, arched or flat-topped, with or without decorative tops
- Privacy – open railings, or solid or perforated infill panels for more privacy
- Height – including any planning limits next to the road (see planning permission)
- Pedestrian gate – a matching side gate for walking in and out
- Colour – black is the classic, but anthracite grey and other colours are popular
Built for Northern Ireland weather
Today's "wrought iron" gates are made from mild steel, and bare steel rusts fast in our climate. So the finish matters. For a gate that lasts, the steel should be hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated. Ask any gate supplier about the finish – it's the difference between a gate that looks good for years and one that's rusty by its third winter.
See my comparison of gate materials.
Making them electric
Metal gates are heavy, so the automation needs to be sized properly:
- Overground motors – from £1,800
- Underground motors – from around £2,400, hidden from view
- Sliding automation – from £1,400, if a sliding gate suits your driveway better
- Fadini hydraulics – for very large or heavy gates
The posts or pillars need to be strong enough to carry the gates. I'll check yours, or supply steel posts set in concrete.
Looking after them
Wash them down a couple of times a year and touch up any chips straight away, before rust gets in under the coating. Oil the hinges, and have the automation serviced once a year.
