Installing electric gates properly is about a lot more than bolting a motor to a gate. It's groundwork, electrics, mechanics and safety – and getting all four right is what makes a gate that works for years instead of months.

Installation is my bread and butter. I've been doing it for 25 years, all across Northern Ireland.

What I install

  • New electric gates – made-to-measure driveway gates in wrought iron, composite or wood, automated and fitted.
  • Gate automation – overground, underground, hydraulic and sliding systems.
  • Automation for existing gates – see automate existing gates.
  • Access control – intercoms, keypads, fobs, app control and remotes. See access control.
  • Safety devices and accessories – photocells, safety edges, warning lights, battery backup and more. See accessories.

I use DEA System automation for domestic and commercial gates, and Fadini hydraulics for heavy-duty gates.

How it works

  1. Chat and survey. You call me, I come out, look at the site and talk through what you want.
  2. Fixed quote. A clear written price with everything included – no surprises.
  3. Preparation. Any groundwork, foundations and cable runs.
  4. Installation. Gates hung, motors fitted, control board wired and safety devices installed.
  5. Setup and testing. The system is set up and force tested to BS EN 12453.
  6. Handover. I show you how everything works, including the manual release, and leave you the manuals and Declaration of Conformity.

Installed safely and legally

When a gate is automated, whoever does it is responsible for making sure it meets the machinery safety rules. In Northern Ireland that means the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 – and from 20 January 2027, the new EU Machinery Regulation, which applies here under the Windsor Framework.

In practice, every gate I install:

  • has the right safety devices fitted
  • is force tested to BS EN 12453
  • has its electrics done to BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations)
  • is CE marked, with a Declaration of Conformity and user instructions

Questions people ask me

How long does it take to install electric gates?

Automating existing gates is often a day or two. New gates with groundwork take longer – your quote will include a timescale.

Do I need an electrician as well?

No – I handle the electrical work for the gate system myself. If your main supply needs changes, I'll tell you up front.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. You'll get a Declaration of Conformity for the gate system, the manuals and a record of the force test results.

Can you install gates I've bought elsewhere?

I can look at them. If they're well made and suitable for automation, yes.
