Got a good set of gates already? There's often no need to replace them. In most cases I can fit automation to the gates you have, so they open and close at the touch of a button – and it usually works out a lot cheaper than new gates.

What can be automated?
Pretty much any gate that's in decent condition:
- wrought iron and steel gates
- wooden gates, including five-bar and field gates
- composite and aluminium gates
- sliding gates
- small single gates right up to large, heavy commercial gates
The gate needs to be solid, swing or slide freely, and hang on strong hinges and posts. If something needs fixing first, I'll tell you. More in can my existing gates be automated?
Prices
| Automation | Starting price |
|---|---|
| Sliding gate automation | from £1,400 |
| Overground swing gate automation | from £1,800 |
| Underground swing gate automation | from around £2,400 |
| Heavy-duty hydraulic (Fadini) | price on survey |
The final price depends on the gate's size and weight, the groundwork and how far the power has to come. See what affects the cost.
The kit I use
I fit DEA System automation on most domestic and commercial gates, and Fadini hydraulics on heavy-duty gates. Both are reliable and well supported for spares.
Converting a gate safely
Here's something most people don't know: when you put a motor on a manual gate, you're turning it into a machine – and the person who does that is responsible for making it safe and compliant. A converted gate has to meet the same safety rules as a brand-new automatic gate.
So every conversion I do gets the right safety devices, force testing to BS EN 12453, and a Declaration of Conformity. It's also why I don't recommend DIY gate kits.
Upgrades and smart control
- Smart and app control – open your gate from your phone, or link it to Alexa or Google Home.
- Upgrading an old system – replace tired motors or control boards, or add safety devices to older gates.

Questions people ask me
Can any gate be made electric?
Most can, if they're solid and hang on strong hinges and posts. Badly sagging or rotten gates may need repairing or replacing first.
Is it cheaper to automate my gates than buy new electric gates?
Usually, yes. Automation starts from £1,400, compared with buying gates and automation together.
Can wooden gates be automated?
Yes, if they're well built and don't twist. See automating wooden and five-bar gates.
How long does a conversion take?
Often a day or two, depending on the groundwork and cabling.
