Some entrances need more than a nice-looking gate. Yards full of plant and materials, farms, depots, car parks, apartment blocks and homes in quiet rural spots all need a gate that keeps people out and stands up to heavy daily use.
That's what security gates are for, and I've been fitting them across Northern Ireland for 25 years.
What makes a gate a security gate?
- Strong construction. Heavier steel sections, solid fixings and posts set in proper foundations.
- Height and design. Taller gates with no easy footholds, and tops that are hard to climb.
- Proper locking. A motor that locks the gate shut, plus electric locks or maglocks where needed. See comparison of gate locking mechanisms.
- Controlled access. Fobs, keypads, intercoms, ANPR cameras or timers, so only the right people get in. See access control.
- Heavy-duty automation. Kit that copes with the weight and the number of openings.

Automation for heavy and busy gates
For most commercial gates I fit DEA System automation. Where a gate is very heavy, very large or opens and closes all day, I use Fadini hydraulics – they're built for exactly that. Big sites often suit a sliding gate, which is very hard to force.
Safety on commercial sites
Commercial gates are used by staff, visitors, delivery drivers and the public, so safety is a legal duty for whoever controls the site. Every commercial gate I fit has the right safety devices and is force tested to BS EN 12453. I also offer maintenance contracts with written records, which help you show you're meeting your duties.
Security for homes
It's not just businesses. Plenty of homeowners – especially in rural areas, or with expensive vehicles or tools on the drive – want a gate that's properly secure. Read benefits of electric gates for security.
