Electric Gate Security Features Explained

If security is the main reason you want electric gates, it's worth knowing which features actually make a difference. Here's what I'd look at, in rough order of importance.

1. A strong gate on strong posts

The best motor in the world won't help if the gate can be lifted off its hinges or the post rocks in the ground. Solid frames, hinges that can't be lifted off, and posts set in proper concrete foundations come first.

2. Locking

  • The motor's own lock (irreversible or hydraulic) holds most gates shut.
  • An electric lock or maglock adds extra holding power on long, heavy or exposed gates.

3. Hard to climb

Tall gates, vertical bars with no horizontal rails to step on, and decorative tops that are awkward to climb all slow people down. Don't add anything dangerous like barbed wire to a domestic gate without advice – you can be liable if someone's injured.

4. Controlled access

Who gets in, and how?

  • Remotes for family and staff
  • Keypads with codes you can change
  • Fobs or cards that can be cancelled individually if lost
  • Video intercoms so you can see who's there
  • ANPR cameras that recognise number plates on commercial sites

See access control.

5. Cameras and alarms

Cameras covering the gate, or a gate that sends an alert to your phone when it opens, add another layer. If a camera covers the street or a neighbour's property, you'll need to follow UK GDPR – the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has guidance on domestic CCTV.

6. Lighting

A well-lit entrance helps cameras, intercoms and safety – and puts people off.

7. The rest of the boundary

A great gate in a low hedge isn't much use. Think about the walls, fences and hedges either side.

Which features do you need?

For most homes: a solid gate, a locking motor and a decent intercom or keypad. For businesses and remote properties, add extra locks, fob access, cameras and alerts. I'll help you decide – call, text or WhatsApp Adrian on 07855 781433.

Questions people ask me

Can my gate alert me when it opens?

Yes – many app-controlled and GSM systems can send a notification to your phone.

Are maglocks secure?

Very, while powered. Add battery backup if you want them to hold in a power cut.

Do I need permission for a camera at my gate?

Not permission as such, but if it captures public areas you must use it in line with UK GDPR. See the ICO's guidance.
