When a gate is big, heavy, exposed to the wind or opened dozens of times a day, I reach for hydraulics. For heavy-duty hydraulic gate automation I use Fadini – an Italian manufacturer that has specialised in hydraulic gate systems for a long time.

How hydraulic automation works
Instead of an electric motor driving a gearbox, a small electric pump pushes oil through a ram (or an underground unit) to move the gate. Oil doesn't compress, so the movement is smooth and very strong, and the system copes well with heavy loads.
Hydraulic automation comes as overground rams on the gate, or as underground units hidden beneath the hinge.
When hydraulics make sense
- Heavy gates – large wrought iron, steel or solid timber gates
- Big openings – estate entrances, farms and commercial yards
- Busy gates – commercial sites, car parks and apartment developments
- Windy sites – exposed coastal or hillside properties where solid gates get battered
- Long life – hydraulic systems are known for lasting well when serviced properly
Locking
Hydraulic systems can be set up so the oil holds the gate locked when it's closed, and open when it's open. That's useful on windy sites and for security. Some versions are designed to be moved by hand, and those need an extra lock. See comparison of gate locking mechanisms.
Price
Hydraulic systems cost more than standard electromechanical motors, and the price depends on the gate size and weight and the type of unit. I price hydraulic jobs after a site survey.
Servicing hydraulics
Hydraulic motors need the right care: oil levels, seals and pressure settings checked, and the safety devices tested. I service and repair Fadini systems and other hydraulic gate motors. See electric gate maintenance.
Fitted safely
A heavy gate is a dangerous gate if it's not set up properly. Every hydraulic installation gets the right safety devices and is force tested to BS EN 12453.

Questions people ask me
Are hydraulic gate motors better than electric ones?
For heavy, large or busy gates, often yes. For a typical domestic gate, a good electromechanical motor does the job at a lower cost.
Do hydraulic motors leak?
A well-fitted, serviced system shouldn't. If you see oil around a ram, get it checked.
Can hydraulics be hidden underground?
Yes – Fadini make underground hydraulic units as well as overground rams.
