The short answer is: probably. Most gates in decent condition can be automated. But a motor won't fix a gate that's already struggling – so here's a quick way to tell whether yours is ready.
The quick check
Go out and open and close your gate by hand.

- [ ] Does it move easily with one hand, without lifting, dragging or forcing it?
- [ ] Does it stay where you leave it, without swinging open or shut on its own? (If it does, the posts or hinges may be out of line.)
- [ ] Is it level, with no drop at the far end?
- [ ] Does it close neatly in the right spot, without scraping the ground?
- [ ] Are the hinges solid, without wobble or excessive wear?
- [ ] Are the posts or pillars firm, not leaning, cracked or rotten?
- [ ] Is the gate itself sound – no rot, rust holes or broken welds?
If you ticked them all, your gate is a good candidate.
Space and setup
- [ ] Swing gates: room behind the gate for the motor and for the gate to open?
- [ ] Sliding gates: a straight, level track, and room for a motor at the end?
- [ ] Driveway slope: does the ground rise behind the gate?
- [ ] Power: is there a supply near the gate, or a sensible route for a cable from the house?
If something isn't right
Most problems can be fixed:
- Sagging gate – adjusting or replacing the hinges, or bracing the gate
- Weak posts – new steel posts or a steel plate on a brick pillar
- Scraping – rehanging the gate or adjusting the ground
- Rot or rust – repairing the gate, or replacing it if it's too far gone
Prices for automation
Sliding automation from £1,400, overground from £1,800 and underground from around £2,400. See automate existing gates.

Questions people ask me
Can metal gates be automated?
Yes, as long as they're solid and hang properly.
My gates are heavy. Is that a problem?
Not as long as the motor is sized for them. Very heavy gates may suit hydraulic automation.
Can a single gate be automated?
Yes – single swing gates and single sliding gates are both straightforward.
